$2.26m for local govt road safety initiatives

13 February 2015

Local councils across South Australia have been awarded funding for a range of road safety improvements and upgrades.

The total investment for the 41 approved projects is $3.2 million, with $2.26 million from the Motor Accident Commission’s Road Safety Infrastructure Fund and the balance provided by Local Government.

The successful projects were identified as having a high road safety outcome.

For example, one of the projects is at Proper Bay Road, Tulka, on the Lower Eyre Peninsula where there have been two fatal crashes in the last five years.

This $250,000 investment will install an ‘S’ bend, shoulder sealing leading up to and through the bend and wire rope safety barrier on the outside of the curves.

Other successful submissions include an upgrade to the St Kilda Road/Robinson Road intersection at Waterloo Corner which will see the installation of new and improved traffic management signage and road widening works.

An allocation of $4 million from the MAC’s Road Safety Infrastructure Fund was set aside for local council projects and this announcement represents the first allocation from that funding pool.

MAC CEO Aaron Chia said the projects, including the installation of school zones, roundabout construction, intersection upgrades, shoulder sealing and guard railings, would help reduce road deaths and serious injuries across South Australia.

"The Motor Accident Commission looks forward to seeing these 41 projects implemented in conjunction with support from local government," Mr Chia said.

"These are practical, positive initiatives which will improve safety on local government roads from the Adelaide metropolitan area through to the far north of the State."

Over half of the funding announced is in regional South Australia. Fourteen regional councils have received over $1.3 million to upgrade their road infrastructure.

Unfortunately, deaths on rural roads are overrepresented in our road safety statistics and funding like this can go a long way to help make our rural road network safer.

A further call is being undertaken with Councils seeking applications for projects for the remaining $1.74 million.
