DPTI targets heavy vehicle compliance

19 May 2015

Road safety compliance and education will be the focus of an operation today that will see the State Government measure and enforce compliance within the heavy vehicle transport industry.

Regulatory Compliance Officers from the Department of Planning, Transport and Infrastructure (DPTI) will work closely with SAPOL and the National heavy Vehicle Regulator (NHVR) to educate the transport industry through roadside compliance checks.

DPTI General Manager Investment Services, Wayne Buckerfield described the operation as a coordinated effort by government to target known factors that can contribute to accidents on the State’s roads.

“Road safety and education is a strong focus for the Department, Mr Buckerfield said.

“We are well aware of the high number of offences committed by heavy vehicle operators and are committed to promoting road safety through enforcing compliance with legislation.

“This operation will be targeting fatigue, accreditation, roadworthiness, load restraint, dimension and mass limits.

“These are all factors that are known to contribute to accidents on our roads.

“Our aim is to identify non compliance and hold those responsible to account for their actions or inactions in line with the Chain of Responsibility requirements.

“All road users benefit from a safe heavy vehicle transport industry.

“Most drivers and businesses take their safety responsibilities very seriously, however a few don’t and it is those drivers and operators that we will be targeting”.

The operation is part of a collaborative, nationwide approach to targeting heavy vehicle driver fatigue and other areas which have a detrimental impact on road safety.
